The Client

Our client has evolved into a leading non-governmental organization, extending its reach to remote rural villages of Nairobi. With a devoted team of over 850 Kenyan staff members, a global network of partners and leaders, and the unwavering support of missionaries, the organization has become a beacon of hope for countless children and families.

Challenges Faced by the Client

In the current system, the organization relies on Power BI to generate student reports and uses RDLC (Report Definition Language Client Side) reports integrated within the web application for operational needs. Additionally, a separate tool, Donor Direct, uses SSRS reports for donor-specific reporting requirements.

This fragmented setup, with separate applications, databases, and reporting tools, creates data silos and complicates cross-functional reporting and analytics. Moreover, the lack of real-time data access limits the organization’s ability to respond swiftly to dynamic business requirements. Current analytics processes are constrained to specific non-peak times, such as mornings or after operational hours, delaying critical reporting and decision-making.

A transition to a centralized platform using Microsoft Fabric was proposed to address these challenges. This new architecture consolidates data into a unified platform, improving data governance, streamlining management, and enabling comprehensive reporting and advanced analytics in real time.

Solutions

To address the challenges of data silos and fragmented reports, UBTI recommended migrating the current databases to Microsoft Fabric. The highlights of our implementation are:

  • Centralized Data Management:Consolidate all data from Donor Direct and other sources into a unified platform using Synapse Lakehouse and Synapse Data Warehouse.
  • Unified Reporting: Power BI is used as the single reporting tool for generating both operational and advanced analytical reports.
  • Improved Efficiency: Streamline data processing and reduce redundancy by leveraging a unified semantic model and centralized governance.
  • Pipeline Development: The pipeline was designed to handle both daily and real-time data loads, ensuring timely and accurate data processing. This robust system enables real-time analytics and comprehensive reporting, providing stakeholders with up-to-date insights for informed decision-making.
  • Realtime Dashboard Creation: Successfully created real-time dashboards to provide the operational teams with up-to-date insights, enabling timely and informed decision-making. These dashboards visualize today’s data dynamically, ensuring that critical metrics are monitored in real-time for optimal operational efficiency.
  • Access Controls and Logging: Configured role-based access, where users have appropriate access to data based on their roles, enhancing security and compliance. Logging mechanisms are in place to track access and changes, providing a clear audit trail and improving data governance.
  • Integrity and Reliability: ensured that the data remains accurate and consistent across all systems. Continuous monitoring and prompt issue resolution maintain high-quality data, supporting reliable decision-making and operational efficiency.
